Whitsunday region to focus on recovery phase

Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Andrew Willcox said the Local Recovery Group has been established today as the region moves into recovery mode.

“Can I stress that transitioning to recovery does not mean that response activities are ceasing.
“It means that Ergon will continue to fix the power, the SES will continue to respond to their task and the Army will continue to help with the clean-up.

“The processes are already established to allow this to continue without the necessity of a disaster coordination centre which was focussed on pre-event planning and safety and immediate post-event response,” he said.

As a result of moving into the next phase Evacuation Centres are also winding down. Proserpine’s has closed, Bowen’s will close today and Cannonvale/PCYC Whitsunday will close tomorrow.

Mayor Willcox said there will be four Recovery Sub Groups which will focus on Human Social, Economic, Environment and Infrastructure.

“Recovery Hubs have also been set up around the region to ensure residents have access to information about grants, financial assistance, insurance, asbestos and personal support.

“There are three Recovery Hubs, one each in Proserpine, Bowen and Cannonvale and these are staffed by highly experienced personnel who are there to answer the community’s questions,” he said.

Recovery Hubs:
Proserpine State High School Hall
Ruge Street, Proserpine
Open daily between 9.00am and 4.30pm.

Bowen TAFE
Queens Road, Bowen
Open daily between 9.00am and 4.30pm.

Cannonvale TAFE
