Whitsunday Regional Council today resolved to immediately review Queensland Governmentowned land and assets within the local government area that can be accessed for economicdevelopment opportunities.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said this follows the receipt of correspondence from the Minister for LocalGovernment Community Recovery and Resilience authorising the Chief Executive Officer to action the review.
“Council has been afforded an opportunity to stimulate economic growth and development via the acquisition of Queensland Government owned land,” Mayor Whitney said.
“The Queensland Government has identified that the acquisition of State land by localgovernments will drive economic growth, boost revenue and spark development.
“There are a number of parcels of land in the local government area which Whitsunday RegionalCouncil would be interested in acquiring.
“These parcels of land would boost economic development, the Council’s asset base, and havethe potential to provide future income for the Council.
“The Queensland Government have outlined that there may be opportunities to either purchaseState land outright or seek transfers of unallocated State land.
“The Chief Executive Officer will now conduct the review and identify the specific parcels of landthe Whitsunday Regional Council are interested in.
“This opportunity has arisen from the Local Government round table attended by the Mayor andChief Executive Officer in Townsville last year,” she said.
