Whitsunday Regional Libraries are inviting the community to celebrate 2017 Book Week titled ‘Escape to Everywhere’.
Each year, schools and public libraries across Australia celebrate the best of Australian children’s literature, authors and illustrators with special book week activities, shows and displays.
Mayor Andrew Willcox said the Whitsunday Region will host a special guest, children’s entertainer and best-selling author Andy Jones.
“Andy Jones has performed to over 10,000 students Australia –wide in the last 2 years with his shows providing a focus on speaking, listening, reading and writing,” Mayor Willcox said.
“His Rap & Rhyme and Rocking Poetry Show shows will be performed at participating local schools across the region and he will conduct a special Rap & Rhyme show at the Cannonvale Library for our 0 to 5 year age group,” he said.
“Our libraries will all be decorated relating to this year’s theme of Escape to Everywhere and they will hold some special Book Week Story Time sessions.”
The following activities will be held across the region:
Proserpine Library- Library theme based on the Enid Blyton Book ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’.- Magical Story Time at 10:30 am to 11:00 am on Tuesday 22 August beneath the Magic Faraway Tree. Dress up as fairies, elves, witches or wizards- Andy Jones – Rap & Rhyme and Rocking Poetry from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Monday 21 August at the Proserpine State School (Primary School only)- Andy Jones – Rap & Rhyme and Rocking Poetry from 9:00 am to 10:00 am on Wednesday 23 August at St Catherine’s Primary School (Primary School only)
Cannonvale Library- Library theme based on the Book Week theme of ‘Escape to Everywhere’.- Andy Jones – Rap & Rhyme and Rocking Poetry for 0 to 5 year olds – 9:30am to 10:30am on Monday 21 August- Children are invited to drop in to Cannonvale Library Monday to Friday from 3:00 pm to - 4:30 pm for free maker space activities.Bowen Library- Andy Jones - Rap & Rhyme and Rocking Poetry at Bowen State School Hall from 9:30 am to 10:30 am (Primary schools only) on Tuesday 22 August- Library theme based on ‘Alice in Wonderland’ with a special Story Time Mad Hatter’s Tea Party 10:30 to 11:30am on Tuesday 22 August- After school Giant Chess Game
Collinsville Library- Library theme based on ‘Shrek & the Kingdom of Far Far Away’ display in the Library- Andy Jones – Rap & Rhyme and Rocking Poetry show & Collinsville Community Centre 1:00 to 2:00pm on Tuesday 22 August- Photo opportunity – if you dare – with Shrek! Anytime during Book Week.
Parents are reminded children Under 8 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. All activities are free. For further enquiries, please contact your local library.
