Kerbside Recycling has arrived in the Whitsundays, with residents beginning to receive their Information Pack and new bin with a yellow lid this week.
The new bin will be collected fortnightly, on the same day as the regular rubbish bin collection in each area.
Only residents with an existing rubbish bin collection will receive the new service, and all other residents can continue to recycle in person at their local transfer station.
Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Andrew Willcox encouraged everyone to get on board, and get excited about recycling.
“Recycling is easy, and everyone in the family can get involved and learn to recycle,” he said.
“Our Info Pack will be arriving in people’s mailboxes from this week, and we have plenty of useful details in there and on our website.”
“Kerbside recycling will help keep our Whitsunday region beautiful, so don’t throw our Whitsundays away!”
Some common household items which can be recycled include newspapers, cardboard, paper, milk and juice cartons, glass bottles and jars, aluminium cans, plastic containers and egg cartons.
Residents should place their recycling bin near the kerb first thing in the morning, at least a foot apart from their normal rubbish bin so the trucks can pick up each bin easily.
There may be slightly different arrangements for some unit complexes, and residents can contact Council if they need further information.
Recyclables collected in the Whitsunday region will travel to the Materials Recovery Facilities in Mackay and Townsville, which weighs and sorts all recyclables before reprocessing them, to be reused in new products.
Kerbside Recycling will reduce the amount of waste which goes into landfill every year, saving our community money in the long-term and looking after our pristine natural environment.
