The first two people from the Whitsunday region will be swimming the English Channel solo inSeptember.
Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Jenny Whitney said Christie Leet, the owner ofPRDNationawide Whitsunday, and Michael Hanisch, Project Development ManagerPRDNationwide Whitsunday, will be swimming the English Channel in early September this year.
“This is a feat that has only been attempted by approximately 150 Australians and Christie andMichael are the first from the Whitsunday region to attempt it,” Mayor Whitney said.
“As well know local personalities, I know the Whitsunday community will be behind both Christieand Michael, cheering them on from afar.
“Premier Campbell Newman has also written a message of encouragement to help inspire them to complete this feat.
“Both Christie and Michael always accept a challenge and are driven to succeed – so I’m sure the daunting task of swimming the English Channel will only inspire both of them.
“Their dedication and physical resilience to take on such a task is to be admired and I wish you all the very best from everyone at Whitsunday Regional Council and across the Whitsunday region,” she said.
The shortest distance is approximately 32 km depending on tides on the day and likely to takebetween 10-14hours nonstop aside from 15 second food breaks along the way. No wet suits areallowed and the temperature can be between 6 -18 degrees in the water.
