Whitsunday Regional Council will begin work on the upgrade of the stormwater drainage system, kerb and channel, and road pavement along Hinschen Street, between Main and Marathon Streets in Proserpine on Wednesday 22nd October.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said $956,000 was committed in the 2014-15 budget to for the first stage of this significant upgrade which will ultimately help improve Proserpine’s flood immunity.
“Once all the stages of construction are complete the new drainage system will help divert floodwater coming off the Sugar Mill site, Faust Street and the railway, improving the risk of flooding in the area,” she said.
“This project will add another significant portion to the upgraded drainage work started nearly 20years ago, greatly reducing the flood risk of the existing storm water system.
“This upgrade project is another example of Council’s commitment to building more flood resilient communities.
“The upgrade works include the installation of reinforced concrete box culverts and associatedpavement reconstruction with kerb and channelling.
“While Council will endeavour to keep disruptions to a minimum, we regret that traffic delays willoccur along this section of the street at times in order to undertake the works.
“Council apologies for any inconvenience this important upgrade will cause, it is anticipated thework will extend through to January 2015,” she said.
The funding provided in the 2014-15 Budget will construct the Hinschen Street stage of the overall planned upgrades.
The rest of the works which include the drainage upgrade works at the Main Street HinschenStreet intersection and pavement reconstruction are envisioned to be funded and completed next financial year.
