Whitsunday Regional Council’s Chief Executive Officer Scott Water will next week fly to Canberrato advocate the Urannah Dam project to the Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said advocating for the construction of the Urannah Dam and improvements to the Burdekin Falls Dam is one of the seven key strategic priorities in the Whitsunday Regional Councils Corporate Plan; Whitsunday 2020.
“The CEO’s invitation to attend a roundtable meeting in Canberra at the request of the Minister for Agriculture to discuss water infrastructure options is an ideal opportunity to further promote the Urannah Dam development,” she said.
“This week, the Federal Agriculture Minister released the government’s green paper oncompetitiveness in agriculture which identifies expanding the Burdekin Falls dam and building the Urannah Dam near Collinsville.
“The Federal Government is keen to build more dams, fund extra irrigation projects across thecountry and secure water supplies for agriculture, so it is a perfect time for Whitsunday RegionalCouncil to be advocating for the development of the Urannah Dam project.
“Council’s Chief Executive Officer has received an official invitation to attend the Roundtablediscussion.
“The discussion has been allocated a three hour timeframe and is an opportunity to meet withsenior leaders in this industry as well as all levels of government,” she said.
The National Water Infrastructure Roundtable meeting organised by Minister for Agriculture andChair of the Water Infrastructure Ministerial Working Group Barnaby Joyce, will be held atParliament House, Canberra on 29 October, 2014.
