Nominations for the 2016 Australia Day Awards are now open to residents in the Whitsunday region.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said the awards presented an opportunity for a range of Whitsunday individuals and groups to be recognised for their outstanding achievements.
“If you know a person or a community group dedicated to making the Whitsundays a better place, help us to recognise their efforts and nominate them for an Australia Day Award,” Mayor Whitney said.
“We often underestimate the dedication and sense of civic pride of everyday people living in our community and the Australia Day Awards are a great way to recognise their achievements,
“The Awards also highlight success in sport and cultural activities; I am aware of many high achievers in this area,
“Council will once again support the ‘Wally Hinschen - Volunteer of the Year Award’ which is an award applicable to towns in the south of the region. This award has previously been coordinated through the Proserpine Lions Club and it provides us with an opportunity to recognise local volunteers who contribute significantly to the area,
“We are fortunate to have people who inspire us and I encourage residents to take the time to nominate someone they know whether it be a neighbour, colleague or friend; entry is free and open to all members and groups.”
