Whitsunday Coast Airport was announced the winner of the Specialised Tourism Services category at this year’s Whitsunday Tourism and Business Awards, building on the success of winning the Local Government Award for Tourism in 2014.
The award caps off a stellar year for the Council owned and operated facility after achieving record passenger numbers and continuing a double digit growth trend that is seeing the region’s tourism industry once again, grow, develop and flourish.
Mayor Cr Jennifer Whitney said that this was a magnificent achievement for all involved with the airport from our airlines to our transport operators and our service providers; this is an award that recognises the hard work and dedication of so many at our region’s airport.
“The first quarter of this financial year was an absolute record with over 90,000 passengers passing through the facility. This is great for our tourism industry and clearly demonstrates the positive impact that the airport provides and the potential of continued increased access and aviation services in our region,” the Mayor said.
“Growth is forecast to continue at a double digit rate due to the strength of the introduction of direct Jetstar Melbourne services and increases in direct Sydney services via Tigerair. The growth in these services is all about our tourism industry and providing direct access to southern capitals for our community,
“As I’ve said before, the Whitsunday Coast Airport is one of the most significant pieces of infrastructure in the Whitsunday region to drive economic and tourism growth in the future,
“Huge congratulations must go to all of the submitters and successful tourism award recipients as well as the team at Whitsunday Marketing and Development Limited and the Palm House at Adventure Whitsunday Big 4, which was an excellent venue.”
