Are you one of over 3,500 people to ‘Like’ the Whitsunday Disaster & Emergency Information Facebook Page?
The Whitsunday Disaster Management Group (WDMG) is encouraging residents to ‘Like’ the Whitsunday Disaster & Emergency Information Facebook Page.
Council’s Mayor and Chair of the WDMG, Jennifer Whitney, said that the aim of the Facebook Page is to provide a direct link for residents to access accurate and relevant information relating to a disaster event.
“Residents can access a range of information through the albums on the page which relate to cyclone preparation, activation of the coordination centre, cyclone categories, shelters, fire preparation, flooding and storm surge and much more,” Mayor Whitney said.
“In the event of an impending disaster event such as a cyclone, the WDMG will feed relevant, up to date and accurate information to the community through the Facebook page. We hope to minimise any mistruths that tend to circulate in the communities and assure residents of the current situation and actions that may need to be taken,” she said.
The Whitsunday Disaster & Emergency Information Facebook page will be a ‘Like’ only page and will be for the provision of information only.
“It is important that people continue to call the Disaster Coordination Centre on 1300 972 006 once the centre is activated. The Facebook page is not a method of seeking help and residents should continue to call relevant authorities in an emergency situation,” Mayor Whitney added.
General information located on the page comes from the Whitsunday Regional Council’s Emergency Action Guide. The Guide provides education and public awareness for residents and visitors to the area in preparation for, response to and recovery from disaster events likely to affect our region. It will provide information and guidance to assist in protection of yourself, your family and your property as far as is practicable.
Residents are encouraged to ‘Like’ the Whitsunday Disaster & Emergency Information page on Facebook as soon as possible to start receiving tips and updates regarding the impending storm season.
