Whitsunday Regional Council has waived the event fee for the 2015 Proserpine Lions Rodeo forSuicide Prevention, which was held between Friday 16 October and Sunday 18 October andraised funds for local depression and suicide prevention support services.
Mayor Jennifer Whitney said Council, which raised over $16,000 for the Black Dog Institute at last month’s inaugural Mayor’s Charity Masquerade Ball, recognised the importance of raisingawareness of depression, mental illness and suicide in the Whitsunday Region.
“Unfortunately, Queensland’s rate of suicide is above the national average with around 600Queenslanders taking their own lives each year,” Mayor Whitney said.
“Council was an event sponsor and we certainly recognise the time, effort and energy put intoorganising the rodeo,” she said.
“It’s very encouraging to see community groups doing their part in raising funds and awareness for suicide awareness, and I congratulate all those involved.”
The Proserpine Lions Club organised the event in conjunction with the Central Rodeo CowboysAssociation, Proserpine Rodeo Association, Whitsunday Bald Eagles and A Mile In Their ShoesInc.
