Whitsunday Regional Council is gearing up for another fun filled Australia Day with family activities, community barbeques, citizenship ceremonies and award presentations occurring across the region next week.
Mayor Jenny Whitney encouraged residents to attend any of the official Australia Day events to be held around the Whitsunday Region on Tuesday, 26 January.
“Local celebrations will start at the Collinsville Community Centre at 7.30am with a barbeque breakfast, flag raising ceremony and presentation of awards,” Mayor Whitney said.
“The Bowen Australia Day celebrations then follow, with a family fun day commencing at the Bowen PCYC at 11.00am and the official ceremony to be held at 12.00 noon,” she said.
“The festivities will wrap up with an official ceremony at the Proserpine Entertainment Centre at 4.00pm, with an evening community barbeque and light entertainment scheduled for 5.00pm.”
The 2016 Australia Day Award recipients for Bowen, Collinsville and Proserpine will be announced at each of the events, with more than 30 new Australian citizens to be welcomed at ceremonies at each of the three ceremonies.
“Each year we celebrate the efforts and achievements of outstanding Whitsunday Region residents through our Australia Day Awards, and I am looking forward to announcing our Awardees next week,” Mayor Whitney said.
“Of course, Australia Day is a wonderful time for our new Australian citizens as well, and it is fantastic that the Whitsunday Region will soon be home to more than 30 new Australians,” she said.
