Mayor Jenny Whitney said yesterday Whitsunday Regional Council held an information session for
Main Street business owners and landlords on the Proserpine Main Street beautification program.
“Council displayed for interested parties the existing design plans for the Proserpine Main Street
beautification,” Mayor Whitney said.
“Business owners and landlords then raised concerns about the completed section between
Herbert Street and Chapman Street.
“It was agreed that business owners and the community are looking for a consistent vision or
theme for the Main Street, to best promote Proserpine as the business town it is.
“Some business owners raised concerns about trees and garden beds reducing truck access to
their businesses and also reducing the number of car parks for Proserpine shoppers, which hurts local business.
“It was also acknowledged that greenery is needed in the Main Street for shade purposes and
aesthetics.
“A possible solution put forward by business owners was the relocation of a few specific trees
causing issues for particular business owners.
“The trees would be relocated to suitable sites within the part of Main Street not yet beautified,
reducing transportation and future beautification costs.
“Safety issues were also raised around the concrete surrounds of the trees, garden beds and light poles causing damage to cars and restricting cyclists not having a clear pathway down the street.
“These safety issues could be addressed by modifying these surrounds.
“I believe today’s information session was an important step in consulting with the local business
owners and landlords and gaining insight into their views on the issue.
“A public petition against the removal of the trees of Main Street has been received by Council and will be presented at the next meeting on the 26th February.
“Further work will then be done by Council on a solution for Proserpine Main Street beautification program,” she said.
