Bell-signed easy-grade trails start at the popular beach resort Horseshoe Bay and Rose Bay and link the two beaches. Sidetracks away from the main path lead to the Murray Bay Resort and to the scene of the first radar and anti-aircraft battery installed in North Queensland during the Second World War. All guns are long gone but the mounting points are still there and the view is stunning. If your time is limited, it is well worth the walk to the Horseshoe Bay lookout.
Some of the most spectacular scenery can be seen from this walking track. Delightful little inlets, the majestic Gloucester and other islands to the east plus the magnificent vista of sea and sky make for some of the most breathtaking views in Queensland. Another easily identifiable landmark is Abbot Point, with its loading wharf snaking out into the blue Pacific just north of the town.
Pinnacle of the walk is the huge rock, Mother Beddock, one of Bowen's most identifiable landmarks. Legend has it that the rock drew its name from a matronly Bowen lady who bore a rather large pimple on her nose. The name, Mother Beddock's Pimple, was shortened to Mother Beddock and the landmark is now shown on all local coastal navigation charts.
It is not uncommon to see wildlife including rock wallabies and scrub turkeys beside the track, particularly early in the morning and at dusk. Here are two lookouts close to town. 'Both give 360-degree views of the area. The view from the lookout on Flagstaff Hill is said to be one of the best Seaview’s in Queensland.
