A Plumbing Approval (a compliance permit) is needed if “carrying out plumbing or drainage work” is categorised as compliance assessable work.

A quick indication of which category of plumbing work applies to a particular type of plumbing work can be determined by having regard to the regulation made under the Plumbing Act.

However, to accurately determine which category of plumbing work applies to a particular type of plumbing work, it is necessary to have regard to:

• schedule 2 (notifiable work) of the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2002 (the Plumbing Act)
• schedule 3 (minor work) of the Plumbing Act
• schedule 4 (unregulated work) of the Plumbing Act

Whilst a compliance permit is not necessary for notifiable, or minor work, the work must:

• comply with any applicable codes
• be performed by an appropriately licensed person.
• be notified to the Queensland Building & Construction Commission (QBCC) (notifiable work only)
