Whitsunday Coast Airport

Stage 1 of the Whitsunday Coast Airport terminal expansion project is well underway with contractors, Paynter Dixon Queensland expected to deliver the completed project by the end of March 2019.

The decision to upgrade the terminal is welcomed with record passenger numbers and six years of positive growth being experienced at the Whitsunday Coast Airport.

There are a total of five stages of the rolling masterplan for development of the airport complex for the long term future.

Each of the staged developments complements the previous so nothing is being built and then removed.

The concept terminal expansion includes:

• Additional carparks
• Additional toilets in baggage claim area
• Provision of additional airside toilets in the expanded departure lounge
• Doubling the size of the departure lounge to comfortably accommodate people from two simultaneous flights
• Interior designed new furniture, signage, carpet, tiles, wall paint and finishes
• Reconfigured and expanded security screening area to allow for a future double lane of security screening
• Relocation of secure departure lounge exit with pass back monitoring and alarm directly into baggage claim area to reduce congestion
• Additional food and beverage seating areas
• More than double the size baggage claim and arrivals area and adding a second baggage carousel
• Expansion of the baggage make up to include a makeup loop with two loading positions and bypass lanes to allow for expedient loading of departing aircraft
• Construction of relocated and expanded airport management offices, including an external emergency operations room

Paynter Dixon Queensland has promised to utilise local contractors whenever possible. On top of improving the capacity for more visitors and enhancing their arrival and departure experience, council estimates the project will support or create up to 100 local jobs, giving this region a massive economic boost.

This council has adopted a measured and sustainable approach to developing the airport and these projects are critical to realising the long term vision of our Strategic plan.

Whitsunday Regional Council would like to thank the Queensland State Government for funding the $15 million terminal expansion project. Without their valuable support, this project would not have been possible.

Indigenous Art Competition

An exciting opportunity exists for Indigenous Australian artists to have their artwork displayed permanently on the Whitsunday Coast Airport’s new terminal building. The $15 million terminal expansion project is well underway and expected to be completed by March next year.

Whitsunday Regional Council is asking for entrants to provide a design idea for a wall mural on the outside of the terminal building. The artwork will become a distinguishing feature at the entrance to the building, which welcomes thousands of international and domestic tourists who visit the Whitsunday Islands and the mainland every year. Council is looking for an artwork which would encompass and capture the Whitsunday region, with a reef, water, sand and aquatic animal theme.

This will be a rare opportunity for an Indigenous Australian artist to receive international exposure. The winning artist will also be invited to the terminal expansion opening event, to reveal and showcase their completed artwork.

All entrants will be assessed by a committee of Council staff and in consultation with local Traditional Owners. The successful artist would receive $10,000 prize money, and the winner will be announced in mid-September. The successful artist will be asked to complete their artwork by early 2019, in time for the opening of the new terminal.
